What Do I Do If My Dog Gets Bitten?
Seeing one of your babies get injured is a stressful experience, and your furry family members can’t just open their mouths and explain how badly they’re hurt. So what do you do if your pup has an unfortunate run-in with another animal that results in a bite wound?
Bite wounds are a fairly common ailment among dogs, but they pose a significant risk because the wound can be deeper than you believe—not the mention the fact that bites are prone to infection.
If your pet has been bitten and needs to see a veterinarian, call the experts at Germantown Vet at (301) 972-9730 for emergency service.
What to Do Immediately After Your Dog Is Bitten
Use a clean towel or cloth to control the bleeding. Apply firm pressure with the towel or cloth. Different areas of the body will bleed more than others (the ears and nose will bleed more, for example).
Visit the Vet
Any time your dog gets bitten, you should visit a vet to have the wound examined. We can assess the injury, determine how deep it is, clean it out, and make recommendations for treatment.
There is a high risk of developing abscesses if bacteria gets deep in your dog’s wound, and the surface skin heals, trapping the bacteria below.
Once you’ve visited the vet, we will most likely recommend a home cleaning regimen that may or may not include antibiotics. Directions for cleaning the wounds may vary, so it’s best to follow the directions given by the vet at the time of inspection.
