Pet Food Recall: Bravo! Listeria Contamination

See all recalled products at the bottom of this page

According to a press release from the FDA, dog and cat food manufacturer Bravo! has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of their pet food because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes—commonly referred to as just “Listeria.”

If your dog or cat has had Bravo! pet food and has been exhibiting abnormal behaviors, including lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, or vomiting, call Germantown Vet immediately—(240) 252-7467.

How Dangerous Is Listeria?

Listeria can be fatal in just a few days—it’s important to act quickly!

Listeria is a bacteria that can lead to severe and sometimes fatal infections—20 – 30 percent of clinical infections result in death in humans. As far as people are concerned, listeriosis (the illness caused by the Listeria bacteria) is especially dangerous for young children and the elderly, so if you’ve been handling Bravo! pet food, see your healthcare provider right away.

Although humans are most commonly affected by Listeria, dogs, cats, and other animals are not immune. In fact, they will exhibit many of the same symptoms a person would after ingesting the Listeria bacteria. If left untreated, listeriosis will cause brain swelling and death.

Listeriosis Symptoms

Common symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Poor coordination
  • High fever
  • Excessive drooling
  • Face drooping—a sign of paralysis in advanced stages

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog or cat after eating Bravo! pet food (or at any time) call Germantown Vet immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. If left untreated, listeriosis will lead to brain swelling and, ultimately, death.
